FAQ
1. What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
There are two different types of licensed vision care professionals: the optometrist and the ophthalmologist. An optometrist is a doctor of optometry (O.D.) who diagnoses and treats visual health. An ophthalmologist is a doctor of medicine (M.D.) who specializes in surgery and diseases of the eye.
2. What is a therapeutic optometrist?
In addition to performing complete eye examinations, a therapeutic optometrist provides treatements for eye diseases.
3. What is pupil dilation?
Pupil dilation allows the doctor to examine the retina (the back of the eye). Dilation can detect many conditions within the eye that may not be detected during a routine eye exam. Dilation is strongly recommended for individuals with a history of diabetes, glaucoma, cataract, high nearsightedness, high blood pressre, sudden change in vision, or any conditions that affect the integrity of the retina. Side effects of dilation are sensitivity to light that lasts 4 to 6 hours and trouble focusing up close for 2 to 3 hours.
4. What is visual field screening?
Visual field screening is a test that checks for loss of sight in your peripheral and central vision possibly due to glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and retinal and neurological diseases. The doctor highly recommend a visual field exam especially if you have a history of headaches, migraines, flashes, floaters, a sudden change of vision, or a family history of glaucoma.
5. How often should I have an eye examination?
Your optometrist recommends that you have yearly eye examination. Determining when an eye examination and health check of the eye are required is a professional determination by the doctor based upon the appropriate "standard of care."
Many eye diseases can only be detected by thorough yearly examinations. Please call our office today to schedule your annual appointment.
